How to assemble a headset?
The adjustment and/or maintenance of the headset is a delicate but essential step for the good functioning of your mountain bike. The precision and comfort of your steering depends on a good mastery of the different steps in the following tutorial.
Tools: 4-5 or 6 spanner / Grease
Step 1
Start by greasing the head tube well with white grease or special carbon paste.
Step 2
The best way to fit the cups is to use a press. The method is to use the logo of the headset as a mark to align it correctly in the axis of the socket.
Step 3
Tighten the press to place the cups at the ends of the pug.
Step 4
Push the cups into the head tube. Check that they are correctly positioned.
Step 5
Position the fork cone on the steerer tube, making sure to press it against the tee.
Step 6
Grease the bearing and insert it into the bottom of the upper cup.
Step 6 bis
Then grease the second bearing and insert it into the bottom of the lower bowl.
Step 7
Fit the top cup and the other various parts (seal, ring, etc.)
Step 8
Reassemble the stem, adjusting the correct height with the 5 and 10 mm spacers, check that the pivot is 5 mm below the stem level.
Step 9
Screw the plug into the star without overtightening, so that there is no hard spot or play in the steering. Tighten the stem bolts with a torque key.
