How to choose your Fatbike
The Fatbike, the result of technical evolutions
You can see more and more hiking bikes with oversized tyres. Called fatbikes, these bikes are not only intended for winter hikes in the snow but can also be used in all conditions. Indeed, the geometries of the fatbike allow better stability and grip in all circumstances. All your driving errors will be forgiven and crossings will seem easier. Even if the pilot does need to have some physical abilities to set the fatbike's big wheels in motion, the bike remains very simple to pilot and is very comfortable to use.
If, however, this is your first bike, we advise you to turn to recreational bikes that will be more accessible and versatile. Moreover, if you are more oriented towards competition, the accelerations on a fatbike can't compete against a cross-country bike.
The fatbike to face all types of terrain
Through snow, sand and mud, a fatbike rolls smoothly and reveals its incredible motor skills which allow it to keep a constant speed despite a very flexible terrain. But contrary to popular belief, the fatbike is also effective on brittle and dry singles. Its large tires combined with low inflation pressure allow the rider to ride a comfortable and stable bike. The fatbike are therefore able to roll quickly on all difficult terrains.
These big tyres' only ennemy remains the bitumen where they need to be a little over-inflated to maintain a good energy output.
The choice of fatbike
Fatbike practice remains an interesting alternative to an ordinary MTB practice. It's aimed above all at cyclists facing harsh environments throughout the year, like in the mountains. Due to its simple design, the absence of a complex pivotal point and of a suspension in general, the fatbike is a rustic and endurable bike. High maintenance isn't required on this bike and also makes it suitable for practitioners who do not wish to repair and adjust their MTB weekly. It might also be used for long-lasting trips of several days in total. Finally, the electric fatbike is a nice alternative to keep the power of an ordinary bike as well as the comfort of a Fatbike. In a nutshell, how to choose your fat bike?
- Choose a fatbike adapted to your size in order to be comfortable and to get the most out of your bike
- Take the width of the tyres into account. The wider the tyre will be, the more important its surface on the ground will be (provided it's inflated around 1 bar).
- Have fun! Sand, snow, mud: all fields are now open to you all year round!
