Asics

ASICS Running: leader in running shoes

The Asics brand was born in Japan in 1949 under the aegis of Mr. Kihachiro Onitsuka. Very quickly the brand established itself in the sport world.
First in basketball and then in 1950 in running at the Boston Marathon with the victory of Ham Kee-Yong who ran in Tiger shoes.
With the victory of the Japanese women's volleyball team with the Tiger at their feet at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games, the brand, still known as Onitsuka, began to be distributed in the United States. It is from this date that the bands so characteristic of the brand on the sides will appear.
At the end of the 1970s, sports shoes underwent considerable improvements and the brand's popularity among athletes increased. In 1977, Asics, an acronym for Anima Sana In Corpore Sano (a healthy mind in a healthy body), was officially created when Onitsuka Tiger and GTO Sports Nets & Sportswear merged. The brand thus highlights its philosophy based on a healthy and sporty lifestyle.

Asics Shoes and Gel Technology

Since then, Asics has continued to innovate and develop both in the creation of shoes adapted to the specificities of the female foot and in research to meet the needs of athletes. In the 1980s, Asics revolutionized its range with its GEL damping system, located at the front and rear of the foot to absorb shocks as much as possible.
Even today, the brand continues to innovate, thanks in particular to its research and development centre, still based in Japan, and its desire to offer products that are increasingly adapted to athletes, particularly sportswear. But Asics, leader on the running shoe market thanks to its two flagship products, GEL NIMBUS and GEL KAYANO, would certainly not have had the same success if Kihachiro Onitsuka's mother had not served him octopus in vinaigrette for dinner: the manager was inspired by octopus suction cups to offer his shoes a sufficient level of grip, necessary during sports practice.
