City Bikes
The different types of city bike
City bikes are designed for urban travel, and are an environmentally-friendly way to get around.
There are several types of city bikes: the Dutch model (a particular type of bike that originated in the Netherlands, robust, comfortable and practical), the fixie (a fixed-gear bike that uses the pedals to lock the wheel and brake), the folding bike and the electric-assist bike. Manufacturers offer a wide range of models, from men's city bikes to women's city bikes.
The configuration of a city bike allows you to ride in an upright position, so you can see the traffic better and feel at ease, unlike a road bike or mountain bike on which you are bent over for a more sporty ride.
Originally fitted with a single gear, city bikes now come with one or more gears, whether you're buying a cheap city bike or a more expensive one.
Women's city bikes
Many manufacturers offer ranges of women's city bikes with special frame geometry. This geometry makes it easier for the user to use the city bike. The frame bar (also known as the top tube) is lower to make it easier to step over.
Choosing a women's city bike
- If you like a leisurely ride, you'll choose a classic city bike or Dutch bike. If you like to go fast, you have the option of a sporty city bike with a stiffer frame for greater responsiveness and lightness, and a more front-wheel drive. An inexpensive city bike for starting out and making short trips will do the trick.
- You can choose between two types of frame: the classic frame with a horizontal tube on the front triangle and the open frame without the horizontal tube to make it easier to climb onto the saddle. The top tube can be replaced by an inclined tube, in which case we talk about a mixed or trapezoid frame. A women's city bike will be fitted with a sloping tube.
- Think about the layout of the town you'll be riding in: if the gradient is flat, you won't need many gears on your mountain bike.
How to equip city bikes
There's no shortage of bike accessories to make your city bike comfortable and safe: mudguards, bell, kickstand, luggage rack, front basket, child seat, lighting (front/rear and reflective strips), hazard spacer and anti-theft device.
