What is a Bash Guard
Bash Guards are generally found on Gravity (Freeride & DH) and Trail Mountain Bikes. Its main role is to prevent rocks and other obstacles from damaging the chainrings.
Bash Guards are attached to the crankset, in place of the largest chainring, and are in most cases an Alloy Circular Disc, CNC machined or not.
This protection is sometimes used in conjunction with a chain guide to prevent chain drop.
If you look closely the drivetrain on a Downhill Bike or Enduro Bike, you will often see these two components.
Which Bash Guard is Right for me
In the cycling industry, there are two main bash guard standards:
Frame Mounted and
Chainset Mounted.
-
Frame Mounted: The bash is generally a half guard and a part of an integrated chain retention system. It is fitted to the frame with ISCG or ISCG 05 plots or directly on the bottom bracket.
-
Chainset Mounted: this format is fitted to the crankset using a four or five bolt attachment. They are in place of the largest chainring and they are protecting the middle chainring teeth. Basically, this bash guard is a chainring with no teeth and its only purpose is to protect the drivetrain.
