BMX Bikes

The history of BMX

The abbreviation BMX from the English bicycle moto cross first appeared in 1968 on the west coast of the USA, specifically in California. Moto-cross is the inspiration for BMX. Teenagers without the financial means to acquire a motorcycle developed a more extreme version of biking. They created dirt tracks with jumps in order, at first to race, but also later to perform tricks.

From the 1970s, BMX racing began to be regulated through official competitions. In 1981, the International BMX Federation created the first world championships. BMX then became something unique and different from the world of cycling or motorcycling. In 1993, BMX was integrated into the UCI; the international cycling union. More than a decade later, BMX race integrated the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics.

The BMX freestyle is not left out, as in 2016 the UCI created a BMX Freestyle park world cup before being integrated into the program of the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020.

BMX Race

BMX Race or BMX Bicross as some people call it, are nowadays very advanced and very different from other BMX bikes. Quite often with a carbon frame and other components, BMX Race bikes are ultra light in order to allow its rider to win the finish line.

BMX freestyle

The big family of BMX Freestyle includes 3 disciplines, street, park and dirt, as we find it in competition. Unlike BMX race, BMX freestyle are made of steel or chromo in order to be resituant to shocks. The tricks performed with a BMX freestyle put stress on the bike, that's why they are reinforced so as not to damage the material. The tires are also very thin >2.0" wide, in order to maintain optimal speed on the track.

BMX street

Street BMX bikes are recognizable by their very short rear chainstays and frames without brake cleats. BMX Street frames are more responsive and nervous than BMX park or Dirt bikes, so they can perform rotations and tricks requiring balance more easily.

BMX park

BMX park bikes generally have longer rear bases than BMX street frames in order to achieve more stability in the air. This is because the tricks performed in BMX park are more aerial and therefore require more stability.

BMX Dirt

BMX dirt or BMX trail bikes are the longest BMX bikes you can find. The rear chainstays of a BMX dirt bike must be long in order to have optimal stability on the bike between each bump. Often equipped with a brake to be able to stop between 2 bumps and a front tire with small studs to keep an optimal grip, BMX dirt are also the most difficult to find from BMX manufacturers.
