The bike chain, a consumable to change oftenly
The bike chain, an assembly of metal links, is the element that will allow the transmission of energy between the pedals and the rear wheel. It comes in several colours, several finishing touches, some are equipped with a "quick fastener" which facilitates the assembly and dismantling of the chain, open links... Prices are very different according to criteria such as solidity, weight, resistance to wear, etc. Be careful when choosing a chain: buy your chain according to the number of speeds on your bicycle cogset.
Regularly checking the chain for wear is important because rolling with a worn chain will make the gear change less flexible and will cause premature wear of the cogset and
chain ring teeth, which normally have a much longer durability than the chain.
If you take too long to change your chain, you'll also need to change your cogset (or your chain rings) at the same time! In extreme cases, you might even fall if your chain breaks at high speed !
Small tip to see if the chain is very worn: place it on the big chainring, and pull with your fingers. If the chain is worn, it will easily lift up, leaving a good part of the teeth visible, that means that your chain is worn out. Otherwise, it will hardly rise.
